Cause and Effect | Artists for Social Change

Can artists inspire change?

In 2017, Marwa Charmand was selected to participate in the Cause and Effect exhibition, part of Vivid Ideas Sydney. The project explored how artists can drive social change, asking the central question: Can artists inspire change?

Marwa was chosen to create a body of work on the topic of war, drawing inspiration from the practice of Käthe Kollwitz, whose art powerfully reflected human suffering and resilience. Her series reflected on conflict, displacement, and survival, connecting these global themes with her Lebanese-Australian Muslim identity and Western Sydney roots.

As part of the project, Marwa also delivered an artist talk, engaging audiences in dialogue about the role of art in raising awareness and provoking reflection on humanitarian issues.
